BL: As far playing in the clubs, 90% of the clubs on Frenchmen Street I’ve played in at one time or another. [Now] I’m playing in Vaso, and I don’t want to play in these other clubs for one reason only: Vaso is the only black-owned club in the area. And I went to school with the daddy whose son now owns the business.
[At the time of posting this, one of Frenchmen’s newer venues, The Royal Frenchmen, is a black-owned venue as well. Cafe Rose Nicaud was another black-owned business, but it closed just before the pandemic. Read about former owner Melba Ferdinand´s favorite Frenchmen era here.]
