Some Trends Across Interviews…

(A working list)

  • Ade Salgado looms large in the collective psyche, where you might find him
  • Lots of memories of the fire at Coco Robicheaux’s house
  • Everyone misses The Bench outside the Apple Barrel
  • …. and The Vacant Lot, where Dat Dog is now. (RIP)
  • A decent/ok night’s pay hasn’t changed much over the decades ($100 bucks a gig is generally considered worth putting pants on for) but rent has … quadrupled? AT LEAST?
  • When asked “When was Frenchmen the best?” two distinct time periods are generally mentioned: 1) The late ’80s thru ’90s (give or take) when Frenchmen was an under-the-radar hang, and 2) The early ’00s til 2012 or 2014ish, once it had taken off as a scene where many musicians could make their entire living. The “beautiful thing,” in the words of longtime Snug Harbor music director Jason Patterson, about this latter phase was that it remained predominantly local rather than tourist-driven for a long time.
