I'd bumped into Windex one night on the sidewalk outside the Apple Barrel, and he told me this story while playing washboard along with the band. It's my favorite kind of recording: noisy, poor-quality, chaotic, partially unintelligible... full of music, warmth, talent, and high spirits.
WP: [Talking begins around 0:40] So you wanna hear a story? Alright. I was walking around playing my washboard right outside the Apple Barrel, and this guy come running outside. He said, “Hey, George Lopez, he wants you to play your washboard inside.”
Guitar Slim was playing that Friday night. I walked in there, and I’m jamming with the band. I’m just jamming and jamming, and George Lopez is looking at me, and we’re still playing … After the jam, I walked over to George Lopez, and I said, “You know what George? You’re a funny-ass motherfucker.” He looked at the back of my jacket—
LD: [reading back of his jacket] “Badass motherfucker.”
WP: —he said, “You’re a badass motherfucker.”
From there, me and him were good friends, and me and him were going were going to the same birthdays. I taught him how to play this [the washboard], and he told me every time I play, he’s with me. He’s a guitar player, but I taught him how to play the washboard…
